Special Old Cask was launched at the end of 1984 after upgrades to Caroni Distillery’s bottling, analyzing, and packaging capacity were completed earlier that year. Even though Old Cask included Caroni’s heavier 10 year old rums, its profile was still in keeping with Caroni’s philosophy at the time of bottling relatively light and dry blends. Special Old Cask should have been arguably Caroni’s flagship product but inadequate marketing and consumer loyalty to other more established brands meant it never achieved the same commercial success as Angostura’s Old Oak or Fernandes’ Vat 19′.
Bottle 1: Classic oval label and brown bottle with bottle cap covered in a golden wrap at 43% ABV.
Bottle 2: Clear glass bottle reflecting Caroni’s 2000 label redesign throughout their line up of aged rums. It has “Specially Blended For The UNIVERSE And The MILLENNIUM” written on the label, a reference to Trinidad & Tobago hosting the Miss Universe beauty pageant in 1999. This version was bottled at 43% ABV. Special Old Cask production ceased with the closure of Caroni’s distillery in the early 2000’s.
